"Feather song", This is another one of the beautiful Kimonos by Sam Brown, 110 cm x 170 cm, Mixed medium on canvas, which just arrived in our gallery. The symbolism of Japanese art within the context and history of the imagery depicted on each individual Kimono, reveals a distinct visual narrative and history of the life of the owner of the Kimono, or the person that it is intended for. Each of my Kimono paintings presents a detailed garment draped over an illusory figure, to avoid an abstract, rigid, illustrative image and in order to accentuate a softer, more feminine shape which captures the sensual folding of the fabric and entices the viewer to imagine or even fantasise about the characteristics of the illusive subject. The painted detail, although not always traditional, is highly symbolic and personalises each artwork to represent a specific narrative for each individual artwork. In order to portray the well-worn antique silks and linens that distinguish the age-old tradition, I developed a measured process of painstakingly layering numerous acrylic and oil glazes on textured surfaces, encapsulating the layers of painted detail and concluding with antique varnishes and resin. I often extend the use of mixed medium to include gold leaf and glass stains. Maja Zenz. Intentional Blur Pink Beach, 100cm x 100 cm, unframed. In her INTENTIONAL BLUR series, experimental photography is in the foreground. It's an adaptation of her BLURRED series, where she creates a blurry effect by photographing by layering foils. With INTENTIONAL BLUR she achieves blurred shots by moving the camera while the shutter is being released (Intentional Camera Movement). This creates motifs with a special effect that cannot be predicted. Exposure time and movement speed of the camera largely determine the effect. The motifs are "pulled along" and washed out. This soft abstraction of reality, which almost seems painted, can also be found in my collages. Here the abstraction comes into being only after the photography by collaging my photos on canvas and subsequent processing with acrylic and oil paints. "Shangri La", 110 cm x 170 cm, Mixed medium on canvas The symbolism of Japanese art within the context and history of the imagery depicted on each individual Kimono, reveals a distinct visual narrative and history of the life of the owner of the Kimono, or the person that it is intended for. Each of my Kimono paintings presents a detailed garment draped over an illusory figure, to avoid an abstract, rigid, illustrative image and in order to accentuate a softer, more feminine shape which captures the sensual folding of the fabric and entices the viewer to imagine or even fantasise about the characteristics of the illusive subject. The painted detail, although not always traditional, is highly symbolic and personalises each artwork to represent a specific narrative for each individual artwork. In order to portray the well-worn antique silks and linens that distinguish the age-old tradition, I developed a measured process of painstakingly layering numerous acrylic and oil glazes on textured surfaces, encapsulating the layers of painted detail and concluding with antique varnishes and resin. I often extend the use of mixed medium to include gold leaf and glass stains. Christian Moore, “I look to you” Painting, Cold Cast Bronze, Ink & Mineral Paint On Hession, 60 cm x 70.00 cms (23.62 x 27.56 ins), Framed Christian spent many years developing his unique method of sculpting the cold cast bronze directly onto the surface of his pieces. The 'cold cast' is made in his studio using a fine bronze metal powder and a resin. Once cured the metal is aged to suit the composition. He deliberately cracks the backgrounds of his work which are a complete counterbalance to the usually crisp white textured foreground. Framed Christian likes to use raw, natural materials in his work such as sand, wood ash or coffee grounds. The primary subject is usually ‘sculpted’ directly on the canvas/hessian, often in bronze or another metal using a type of cold casting. The ‘cold cast’ is made in the studio using metal powder and a type of resin. Once cured, the metal is aged to suit the composition before sealing and protecting the work. Each of my Kimono paintings presents a detailed garment draped over an illusory figure, to avoid an abstract, rigid, illustrative image and in order to accentuate a softer, more feminine shape which captures the sensual folding of the fabric and entices the viewer to imagine or even fantasize about the characteristics of the illusive subject. The painted detail, although not always traditional, is highly symbolic and personalizes each artwork to represent a specific narrative for each individual artwork. In order to portray the well-worn antique silks and linens that distinguish the age-old tradition, I developed a measured process of painstakingly layering numerous acrylic and oil glazes on textured surfaces, encapsulating the layers of painted detail and concluding with antique varnishes and resin. I often extend the use of mixed medium to include gold leaf and glass stains. Beautiful artwork by Christian Moore. “Remember the time”, 70 cm x 80 cm, bronze cold cast with mineral paint and sand on hessian. Framed Christian likes to use raw, natural materials in his work such as sand, wood ash or coffee grounds. The primary subject is usually ‘sculpted’ directly on the canvas/hessian, often in bronze or another metal using a type of cold casting. The ‘cold cast’ is made in the studio using metal powder and a type of resin. Once cured, the metal is aged to suit the composition before sealing and protecting the work.
